Artists Statement

Ten years ago the horse began to emerge in my work. Since that time, I have continued to create and recreate this powerful symbol that represents the strength and freedom it takes to continue my evolution as an artist.

As I transition from painting to working with clay, I find I am able to create a three-dimensional canvas to incorporate paint, form and symbolism. This combination gives me a more extensive language to express my artistic voice.

I like to start each piece without a pre-conceived idea allowing the clay to direct me by using the process of subtraction and addition to create the form. When the finished piece is ready for decorating I paint on the surface quite freely with the glaze. Using a pit fire with leaves, sawdust, wood, pods and charcoal helps to create a unique and unexpected surface. It is this element of “not knowing” that truly awakens my creative spirit and has kept me engaged for 30 years!
